Distortus rex

The Distortus rex (D. rex) is a mutant dinosaur and one of the main antagonists of Jurassic World: Rebirth. The Distortus rex was created on Ile Saint-Hubert in a research facility for Jurassic World.

Appearance

The Distortus rex is a huge, heavily mutated dinosaur that is suffering from brachycephaly (a shortened, blunt skull) and polymelia, giving it a total of six limbs. It walks primarily on two powerful hind legs and a pair of gorilla-like front arms with clawed hands used for grasping prey. Nearer its chest is a much smaller pair of arms that resemble those of a traditional Tyrannosaurus rex.

The D. rex moves with a hunched, quadrupedal gait similar to a great ape. Its head features a bulbous, beluga whale-like forehead, tiny eyes, and a mouth filled with short, jagged teeth. The creature has a yellow base colour covered in dark brown spots and markings, a white underbelly, and orange eyes.

Behaviour

The D. rex is a nocturnal ambush predator. It is highly aggressive and strictly carnivorous, though it displays curiosity, often toying with its victims before eating them.
According to Henry Loomis, the creature is drawn to bright lights and loud noises. It will often ignore shouting humans and go towards car alarms or glowing flares.

Origins and Escape

The creature was created prior to 2010 and was part of an experimental genetic project that also created creatures like the Mutadon. This specific D. rex was designated as “D-REX V.23.111,” marking InGen’s 26th attempt at engineering the species. Because of its disturbing mutations, it was deemed unsuitable for the Isla Nublar theme park, so it was left at the Ile Saint-Hubert facility for further study.

The D. rex eventually escaped in 2010. During a routine exam, a scientist threw a chocolate wrapper away, which was sucked into a vent and jammed the locking mechanism of the D. rex’s cell. The creature broke free, killed the scientist who dropped the wrapper, and everybody in the facility was evacuated. The mutant destroyed its enclosure and established itself as the island’s apex predator.

2025 Ile Saint-Hubert Incident

In 2025, a group of humans (Zora, Henry, Martin Krebs and the Delgado family) were stranded on the island and eventually encountered the D. rex. When Henry Loomis fires a flare into the fog to signal an incoming rescue helicopter, the D. rex snatches the chopper out of the air and throws it to the ground, killing the rescue crew in a massive explosion.

The survivors later encounter the mutant near a water drainage system. While the group tries to stay out of its way, Martin Krebs attempts to escape toward the docks in a Jeep with stolen DNA samples. The D. rex goes to investigate the vehicle’s alarm and blocks its path. It takes Martin from the crashed Jeep and bites him in half. The DNA is dropped and Zora goes to retrieve it.

The survivors try to lower an escape boat at the docks, but a jammed hoist sets off a loud alarm. The D. rex is drawn out and Duncan Kincaid lights a road flare. He acts as bait and lures the mutant into a swamp. This allows the others enough time to fix the boat’s engine and speed away right as the beast lunges for them.

Duncan survives his encounter in the swamp. Once his flare burns out, the D. rex loses interest in him and wanders off.

Trivia

Production and Directorial Choices

• While the creature’s official length is listed at 14.5 meters, its size appears to change from scene to scene. This is a deliberate stylistic choice by director Gareth Edwards, who often exaggerates the scale of giant monsters in certain shots to make them feel more imposing and cinematic.
• The D. rex shares several visual and thematic similarities with the MUTOs from Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla film. Additionally, the scene where the mutant kills the character Williams is framed as a direct homage to the opening of Godzilla.
• The film originally had a different ending where the D. rex engaged in a massive battle with a sauropod and was ultimately trampled to death.
• Despite the creature surviving the events of the movie, Gareth Edwards has clarified that letting the monster live was not intended to tease its return in a future sequel.

Franchise Firsts and Milestones

• The Distortus rex is unique among Jurassic World antagonists in that it survives the movie. It is the second dinosaur antagonist in the entire franchise to survive on-screen (after the Spinosaurus in Jurassic Park III).
• Along with the Mutadon, the Distortus rex is the first main dinosaur whose full name is never actually spoken by the cast. The full name only appears as an abbreviation on a lab sign, and the creature is only referred to aloud once when a scientist screams, “The D. rex broke free!” during the prologue.

In-Universe Biology and Design

• Unlike the Indominus rex or Indoraptor, the D. rex doesn’t display psychopathic traits and does not kill for sport. It acts like a natural animal.
• It is the first dinosaur in the Jurassic franchise to have six limbs.
• Fans have heavily theorised that the creature’s DNA was spliced with Titanosaurus. This is supported by an interview with writer David Koepp, who revealed that the D. rex was originally drafted as a simple mutated T. rex before the creative team decided to mix its genetics with sauropod DNA. This hybrid backstory explains the monster’s huge size and its unusual, bulbous forehead.
