Indoraptor

The Indoraptor is a genetically engineered hybrid dinosaur created by Dr. Henry Wu in the secret underground laboratories of Lockwood Manor. It acts as the main dinosaur antagonist in the 2018 film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Appearance

While it shares some genetic traits with the Indominus rex, the Indoraptor is roughly half the size and features a much more streamlined, raptor-like build. It has a sleek, black body with golden-yellow stripes running from either side of its neck down to its tail. This is similar to Blue, which has a blue stripe.

The creature possesses deadly, sickle-shaped raptor claws and four-fingered hands equipped with opposable thumbs. Its skull is a sleeker, more streamlined version of the Indominus rex, featuring small, Allosaurus-style crests over its eyes, which are surrounded by red markings. It also has small quills on the back of its neck. Its mouth is filled with jagged, uneven teeth. It primarily moves on all fours, but it can easily walk or run on two legs.

Behaviour

The Indoraptor is highly intelligent and deeply sadistic. It is frequently seen toying with and torturing its prey before killing it. While the Indominus Rex’s aggression was caused by isolation, it is believed that the Indoraptor’s cruelty was caused by it being deliberately abused by its captors.

Origins

Dr. Wu designed the dinosaur as a living biological weapon. The specific Indoraptor seen in the film was merely a prototype. It was trained to attack targets using a combination of a pulse-coded laser pointer to mark the prey and a high-frequency acoustic trigger to initiate the attack.

Because it was a prototype, the Indoraptor was out of control. It lacked loyalty, empathy, and the ability to follow complex commands. Wu realised he needed ot use Velociraptor Blue’s DNA to correct the problems and to use Blue to teach future Indoraptor generations obedience and emotional bonds.

Movies

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The Indoraptor is seen in the basement of Lockwood Manor. It is first seen when Maisie Lockwood sneaks into the basement lab and is nearly grabbed by the creature. Later, auctioneer Gunnar Eversoll showcases the creature to a room full of black-market buyers. A Russian mobster makes a $28 million bid, which convinces Eversoll and Eli Mills to sell it. The auction is stopped when Owen Grady releases a Stygimoloch into the room, which causes chaos.

Ken Wheatley shoots the Indoraptor with tranquilliser darts, enters its cage and tries to pull out one of its teeth for a trophy. The Indoraptor fakes being unconscious, waits for Wheatley to get close, and bites off his arm before mauling him to death. Eversoll hides in a nearby elevator with other guests. Just as they think they are safe, the Indoraptor’s swinging tail accidentally hits the elevator’s control panel, opening the doors.

The Indoraptor hunts Owen, Claire Dearing, and Maisie throughout Lockwood Manor. It chases them through the manor’s fossil museum, injuring Claire. It then tracks Maisie to her bedroom, entering through the balcony. Owen arrives and shoots the dinosaur, but the bullets don’t penetrate its tough armour. Blue arrives and pounces on the hybrid.

They end up on the glass roof of the manor. Claire uses the laser-targeting rifle to trick the Indoraptor into pouncing onto a fragile section of glass. The creature slips but manages to pull itself back up. Blue then launches a surprise attack, sending both dinosaurs crashing through the skylight. The Indoraptor lands squarely on the horns of a fossilised Agujaceratops skull, killing it instantly. Blue survives and runs off.

Trivia

In-Universe Lore & Biology

• The Indoraptor is the first confirmed male dinosaur in the Jurassic World trilogy. It is also the first dinosaur in the franchise to be bred on the mainland rather than on an island.
• Director Colin Trevorrow confirmed that despite its intelligence, the Indoraptor does not possess any human DNA.
• Because it was only a prototype, the Indoraptor did not inherit the Indominus rex’s advanced genetic traits, such as camouflage or thermoregulation.

Design, Sound, and Psychology

• Colin Trevorrow said that the Indoraptor was meant to be physically sick and mentally unstable. This is reflected in the practical animatronic used for the film, which features peeling skin and a diseased-looking mouth.
• Concept art originally depicted the dinosaur covered in scars to emphasise that it was a heavily abused animal. This is hinted at in the film when guards repeatedly tase it.
• The terrifying sounds of the Indoraptor were created by blending the audio of a lion, a cougar, a pig, a chihuahua, and a mechanical dental drill.

Horror Movie Homages

The Indoraptor was heavily inspired by classic horror cinema monsters:

• Frankenstein’s Monster: It was artificially stitched together in a lab using parts of different creatures.
• The Wolfman: It runs on all fours and is seen howling at a full moon.
• Nosferatu & Vampires: Like a vampire, it stalks the shadows and is ultimately killed by impalement. Its long limbs, jagged teeth, and nighttime fixation on a young girl were directly inspired by 1922’s Count Orlok from Nosferatu.
• Dracula: Director J.A. Bayona confirmed that the shot of the Indoraptor crawling down the roof into Maisie’s bedroom is a direct homage to John Badham’s Dracula.
• Cujo: Its aggression, mental instability, and focus on hunting a child mirror the rabid dog from Stephen King’s Cujo.

Comparisons to Other Dinosaurs

• It is Dr. Wu’s only hybrid that never killed another dinosaur.

Scrapped Concepts & Deleted Scenes

• Early concept art featured a second, white Indoraptor. The movie was originally going to feature the black Indoraptor fighting and killing its white counterpart, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.
• A deleted introductory scene showed the Indoraptor intentionally breaking a lightbulb in its cage to trick a repairman into entering. After killing the worker, the dinosaur was seen playing with his skull.
• Unused concepts for the film’s climax involved the Indoraptor escaping Lockwood Manor, attacking a nearby lighthouse, and getting into a high-speed car chase with Blue.
